The mid-range OM Systems OM-5 is on sale on for US$999.99 at various retailers. The compact Micro Four Thirds camera is OM Systems's (formerly Olympus) most recent entry into the M4/3 system, and, despite the samey looks, the OM-5 brings a host of improvements over its predecessors and contemporaries. Among its top features are 7.5-stop IBIS, a versatile 20.4 MP sensor, and computational photography smarts.

There are plenty of benefits to an interchangeable lens camera, although price is often a discouraging factor for many when shopping for an entry-level or mid-range interchangeable lens camera, while the size and inconvenience of full-frame or APS-C photography kit can be a deterrent to actually using the kit. The Micro Four Thirds camera system aims to address many of these concerns, offering affordable, feature-rich camera bodies and a vast selection of lenses that deliver solid image quality without the cumbersome kit of bigger sensor systems.

OM Systems's OM-5 is the company's latest entry into the mid-range M4/3 market, and it serves up a worthwhile experience. It keeps basically the same body — albeit a hair smaller — as its Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III predecessor but updates the feature set and image processor. The image processor is the same TruePic IX unit found in the flagship E-M1 III, which gives it access to a number of nifty computational photography features, like hand-held hi-res mode and a live ND mode for long-shutter effects without the need for an ND filter.

The plastic body of the OM-5 might not feel particularly premium, but it does help keep the weight low — a whopping 414 g (0.91 lbs) — and it has splash and dust resistance by way of an IP53 rating. The OM-5 also features face- and eye-tracking autofocus, 4K 30 fps video without a record limit, 1080p 120 fps slow-mo video, and a 3.5 mm microphone input, making it a capable hybrid camera for those that want to experiment with video.

With the 17% — US$200 — discount, the OM Systems OM-5 comes in at US$999.99.
